The Back Up Plan (2010) movie review

September 13, 2010 · by Macky · in Movies

It was my rest day and I did not have enough things to do so I thought of downloading some movies. I did not know about this movie not until my customer chatted and asked what was the “The Back Up Plan” charge for? So I told the customer that it was an On Demand movie she purchased, then she said that it was funny she forgot. Maybe she thought it was another one time installation charge. haha Good thing, she understood.

So I Googled to find out what was the movie all about. It intrigues me because Jennifer Lopez is the main actress and it is a Romantic comedy. So here goes my reaction paper. lol

The Back Up Plan
2010
CBS Films

CAST: Jennifer Lopez a.k.a Zoe; Alex O’Loughlin a.k.a Stan

SYNOPSIS: Zoe desperately wants to have a baby and she is single. She convinces Clive, her friend, to donate a sperm for her but he declines. Although her friend Mona discourages her to have a baby saying that her children ruin her life (lol), that does not stop Zoe to think of a back up plan. She rushes to the hospital and an old helpful doctor inseminated her a sperm from an unknown donor. Her doctor says “Everything’s gonna be great. I have a feeling that you and, uhm… CRM-1 01 4 are gonna make beautiful babies together.”

Zoe walks out from the hospital so happy because the doctor just inseminated a sperm to her and she is positive she is going to have a baby. She really wants to have a baby, you know. While going home from the hospital, she waits for a taxi… that is the moment when boy meets girl. Zoe meets Stan, a seemingly annoying bachelor at first impression.

It is quite unbelievable though. Zoe thinks Stan stole her taxi and Stan also thinks Zoe stole his taxi. That was not quite a good way to start a relationship. It is raining and it is obvious Stan ruins Zoe’s happy mood right where she gets from the hospital. Ending, both of them leave the taxi and Zoe just walks out from him. Stan follows her and still does not make a good impression towards Zoe.

One time Zoe and Mona go to Tribeca Farmer’s Market where Mona can buy a muffin for Teacher Appreciation Day. Little do they know that Stan sells cheese in that place. That is the second meeting. Stan offers Zoe a free samples of his cheese but she is hesitant and declines his offer. She then says good bye and I can tell at that time Stan is starting to win Zoe’s heart.

Stan and Zoe fall in love with each other. But Zoe is pregnant. She has to tell Stan. Stan is not prepared to have a baby but she falls for Zoe so he accepts her pregnancy. This brings the whole story into a romantic comedy. To find out more of the story, you better watch it.

The scene when Zoe and Stan argue for stealing the taxi.

RATING/RECOMMENDATION: The movie is good for young adults and couples out there who would want to relate the story. I like kids so I want to relate myself in the story. The comedy fails me to burst into laughing though there is some quite good laughing point. Most of the plots are quite exaggerative yet it could be true. No one can understand the pain of pregnancy so I could not understand why the woman in the movie overdo her labor. Also, a three year old breastfeeding to her mother is quite an exaggeration yet it could also be true to some. Well, that is quite funny!

I think Jennifer Lopez and Alex O’Loughlin are fit for this role. Their acting is good enough as well as the supporting actors. The scene when Jennifer use the pregnancy tester in the comfort room and then the puppy observing her is quite predictable. I knew it! The puppy grabbed the tester!

The main lesson of the movie is we should be ready when things will not go as planned. Over all, the movie is fair enough to watch. It is 4 out of 5 stars.

Fireproof 2008 movie review

January 20, 2009 · by Macky · in Movies, Sliding Panel

Yeah. Fireproof is another film from Sherwood Pictures that is also behind of Facing the Giants.

I am not married but still I believe God spoke to me the time I watched this movie. Okay, I am 22 now and who knows 8 years later or less, I will get married. Fireproof explains the struggles a couple may find in marriage and how God repairs it.

To see the plot of the movie, read this Fireproof 2008 film website from Wikipedia.

Never leave your partner behind

Even before, God already created marriage. Genesis 2:18 “It is not good for the man to be all alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”

Caleb and Catherine Holt forgets their purpose why they got married. Maybe at first time, they felt that love is basing in their emotions, well as we know, emotions cannot be trusted. They said bad things towards each other which we know is pointless. Until, Catherine said “I want out.” So they thought Divorce was the answer.

Caleb’s parents who feel accountable for his son took a visit and talked with their son. Caleb was irritated to his mother and so he is much comfortable to talk to his father than to his mom. His father had a strong foundation of Jesus and challenged his son to commit the 40 day Love Dare while they were preparing of divorce lawsuit. Caleb expected the Love Dare to be not a religious commitment. While following the half-way point of the Love Dare challenge, Caleb saw that it was not working. He was totally hurt. He was loving a Catherine who in return did not love him back. He talked to his dad again and realized that he needs someone who can make him change. At that point, he has faith to Jesus who loves us all inspite of the rejections we did to Him.

In the movie, we saw how Jesus works when we have him. There is understanding, true love and peace.

I recommend this movie to all of you out there. I hope that through this, God is speaking to you. My prayer is that you’ll learn a new perspective about marriage that can please God.

I want to congratulate the Sherwood Pictures and all other people who contributed a lot to this movie. May we have this kind of movie more. I am so blessed with this movie.

I Am Legend movie review and quotes

January 14, 2009 · by Macky · in Movies, Sliding Panel

I Am Legend

I saw the movie I AM LEGEND starred by Will Smith. And I thought writing a review about the movie could add something interesting on this website. And so I’ll start now.

SYNOPSIS:

In 2009, there will be a deep research on reprogramming a measle virus. On this genetically engineered virus, it is believed that it could cure cancer. Thus, making the measle virus beneficial rather than harmful to the human race.

But three years later (2009+3=2012), the effect of that innovative research turned the civilized New York City into ground zero, meaning the viruses infected the people and made them blood thirsty zombies (comparable to Resident Evil, eh?), thus, the city was inhabited with sick people.

It happened then that only Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) and his companion dog Samantha were immune. The zombies were afraid of sunlight (they are literally termed as dark seekers) and so they were nocturnal. This affected the lifestyle of the survivors. At daytime, Neville was finding a cure for the dark seekers. At night, Neville locked up all the windows and doors of his house so that no dark seekers might caught him.

The struggle of Neville started when his dog accidentally followed the running deer and entered inside a dark room of the building where dark seekers hided. Neville got nearly infected with the zombies; luckily he had escaped out of the building. With this, Neville find a way to trick them. He caught one zombie girl who’ll be useful on his research on their cure.

But the zombies were mindful and also tricked Neville back. With the situation, his dog Samantha got infected and died. Neville’s life changed when his dog passed away.

Until it turned out that the last man on earth was not all alone.

Well, it’s for you to find out how the rest of the story goes.

GREATEST QUOTES and APPLICATIONS ON MY CHRISTIAN LIFE:

The I AM LEGEND movie has many worthy memorable quotes. I did write a few.

I like the part when Ana and Ethan enters the scene. Neville was working on his lab to find a cure when Ana entered and saw the pictures of the turned zombies people. They have these lines:

Anna: Did all of them die?
Neville: Yes.
Anna: My God.
Neville: God didn’t do this Anna. We did.

My comment: We should always remember that in the beginning God created a beautiful paradise for us to live. And it is only us who ruin everything. Right? So Neville is right on this quote.

Another part I like is when Neville shared to Ana how he named her daughter Marley. Well, Neville like Bob Marley and explained to Ana about Bob Marley’s music.

Neville: He had this idea. He believed that you could cure racism and hate literally cures it by injecting music and love into people’s lives. When they were scheduled to perform at a peace rally, a gunman came to his house and shot him down. Two days later, he walked out on that stage, and sang. Somebody asked him, “Why?” He said “The people, who are trying to make this world worse, are not taking a day off. How can I? Light up the darkness!”

My comment: Yes. Our enemies are not stopping until they let us down. So there’s no way for us to stop. Keep serving the Lord and be the light and salt of the earth. Read Matthew 5:13-16 Bob Marley is right!

Then my favorite scene is when Ana convinced Neville to come with her to go to a colony of immune people. She had this faith that God has a plan for everything. She was certain that there’s a colony even if she had not figured out how she knew. But Neville insisted that there is no God which I strongly disagree.

Anna: Come with us, Neville. To the colony.
Neville: There is no colony, Anna. Everything just fell apart. There was no evacuation.
Anna: You’re wrong. There is a colony. I know, ok.
Neville: How do you know, Anna?
Anna: I just know.
Neville: How? I said how do you know? How could you know?
Anna: God told me. He has a plan.
Neville: God told you?
Anna: Yes.
Neville: The God?
Anna: Yes. I know how this sounds.
Neville: It sounds crazy.
Anna: But something told me to turn on the radio. Something told me to come up here.
Neville: My voice on the radio told you to come here, Anna.
Anna: You were trying to kill yourself last night, right?
Neville: Anna.
Anna: And I got here just in time to save your life.
Neville: Stop it.
Anna: Do you think it’s a coincidence.
Neville: Just stop it.
Anna: He must have sent me here for a reason.
Neville: Stop it.
Anna: Neville, the world is quieter now. You just have to listen. If we listen, we can hear God’s plan.
Neville: God’s plan?
Anna: Yeah.
Neville: Alright, let me tell you about your God’s plan. It was 6 billion people on Earth, when the infection hit. KV had a 90 percent kill rate, that’s 5.4 billion people dead, crashed and bled out. Dead. Less than 1% immunity left 12 million healthy people , like you, me and Ethan. The other 588 million turned into your “Dark seekers”. And then they got hungry, and they killed and fed on everybody. Everybody! Every singled person that you or I have ever known is dead! Dead! There is no God. There is no God!

My comment: Neville is 100% wrong on his statement that there is no God. Many people died not because it was all of His plan, but because of man’s hardheadedness. In Romans 1: 24, 26 & 28, it is clearly stated that God will let those people who don’t follow His plan go on their own way. So we have the freedom to do what is right and what is not. But after all these, the time will come that we will be judged. So on this movie, people who wished to exceed God’s greatest knowledge failed to overcome their problems. And so we suffer from our own desires.

But in the end of the movie, Neville finally knew the reason why Anna was around. She is the connector from the legend to the next legacy. She brought to them the cure which Neville discovered just in time the zombies attacked them. When Neville opened his heart and saw the situations, he just remembered his daughter. And he began to listen to things. I mean, things that can’t be heard by our ears but can be heard by the eyes of our heart alone.

The movie is great. The cinematography depicted how a city will turned if there are no busy people enjoying it. The plants that are growing on the streets is already a thumbs up. The make up of the zombie people is good enough. Will Smith is a good actor on this. And the dog looks rational on this one.

For me, the movie is 99.5%. The 0.5% remaining are for the mistakes they got like the flags which were still in perfect conditions on the movie for three years and others.

The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian

January 13, 2009 · by Macky · in Movies, Sliding Panel

Chronicles of Narnia Prince CaspianWe actually planned this with my friends at church long way before Narnia Prince Caspian movie has been set into screening that we should watch this movie. And hey, it is just today that the movie begins its first showing here in the Philippines. Poypoy who is really my super dooper best friend gave us a treat, me and my girlfriend Anamae, to watch the movie. I am really excited to see the movie you know. And right in the afternoon at Bohol Quality Mall Cineliesure 2, we sat on the movie house and watched The Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian based by CS Lewis novel.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA PRINCE CASPIAN movie

DIRECTOR: Andrew Adamson CASTS: Ben Barnes, George Henley, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Anna Popplewell, Sergio Castellito and more…

THE STORY AS WHAT I HAVE UNDERSTOOD:

King Miraz’ wife born its child (i dont know if its a boy or daughter) in the introduction of the movie. I haven’t really understood because for a while later, a professor woke up Prince Caspian and warns him about the danger of being killed. I just understood later when King Miraz together with other officials, entered Prince Caspian’s bedroom and started shooting. Prince Caspian received the wind instrument from his professor and ran away the kingdom. He is truly in danger because he is going to be the next King (well, King Miraz is not yet a king on that time) and King Miraz’ motive is to be the next King and not Prince Caspian. So he wanted to kill the prince.

The soldiers saw Prince Caspian ran away from the kingdom. And so they went after him and wanted to catch him. Until the Prince reached Narnia. This time, it’s really a long story to tell. It was on this time, Prince Caspian used his wind instrument and called the Sons of Adam who are Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter Pevensie. These Sons of Adam must help the Prince to stop King Miraz and make the Prince the next King.

So, I am not a spoiler. I just tell you the introduction. hehehe

MY FAVORITE QUOTES:

The movie is not just a thriller, action or fantasy but also comedy. I researched some of the quotes I like. And enjoy reading them… if you have seen the movie, you understand why I laugh on these lines.

When Prince Caspian meets the high King Peter… This is really funny. I think this is the time when small romance begins between Prince Caspian and Susan.

[Caspian and Peter begin a swordfight. Peter's sword gets stuck in a tree, so he attempts to pick up a rock to hit Caspian]
Lucy Pevensie: No! Stop!
Peter Pevensie: [after seeing the Narnians gathering around] Prince Caspian?
Prince Caspian: And who are you?
[Susan and Edmund run over]
Susan Pevensie: Peter!
Prince Caspian: High King Peter?
Peter Pevensie: I believe you called.
Prince Caspian: I thought you’d be… older.
Peter Pevensie: Well if you like, we can come back in a few years.
Prince Caspian: No! No, it’s alright! You’re not exactly what I expected.
Prince Caspian: [locks eyes with Susan]
Edmund Pevensie: Neither are you.

I also like when Edmund told King Miraz about the challenge of Peter to fight King Miraz. He told King Miraz these lines… He wanted to be called King Edmund rather than Prince Edmund. hahaha

King Miraz: Tell me, Prince Edmund…
Edmund Pevensie: King.
King Miraz: I beg your Pardon.
Edmund Pevensie: It’s King Edmund, actually. Just King though. Peter’s the High King.
[awkward pause]
Edmund Pevensie: I know, it’s confusing.

And this reaction from Lucy and Edmund after they saw Susan and Prince Caspian kissed each other.

[watching Susan kiss Caspian goodbye]
Lucy Pevensie: I’m sure when I’m older, I’ll understand.
Edmund Pevensie: I’m older and I don’t think I *want* to understand…

MY COMMENT ON THE MOVIE

I can see that this movie follows more success to what the previous Narnia movie (2005) had. Why? Because the Sons of Adam acting are improving. Especially on the fighting scenes. But I prefer Jackie Chan in terms of fighting of course. hehehe The effects are okay. But I don’t really like when the Witch appears. Because the transformation of the wall into ice is not really realistic. Its pretty obvious that its done by a computer wizard. hehehe But hey, the God-like water that appears is really cool. This is the coolest computer effect I guess. And oh. The cinematography is really believing. According to my research, they shot it in Czech Republic. The cosmetics on the dwarf like characters, and half human and half animal characters are creative. The creation of the heroioc mouse is very imaginative. Its really a feast to the eye especially on the battle part. And yeah Aslan is okay.

Well, in my conclusion. This movie is recommended to all viewers. If you are not into fantasy, better not watch the movie because after all, there is no reality in it. What is mere real in the movie is the common values the characters played that we humans should learn from it.

OVERALL: not boring, 5 stars.
